Awatere Tussock Track

On the Awatere Tussock Track we walk for three days about 25km through the back country of Glen Orkney, the Harvey family merino sheep farm in the Awatere Valley of Marlborough. This beautiful walk takes us through rolling tussock covered hills, along bush clad creeks and through reserves of protected, regenerating native plants. Past grazing merino sheep that provide wool for the famous Icebreaker brand of clothing, we enter into the rugged high country where the mountain views are spectacular. A true New Zealand backcountry experience!      Guided Private Walk Awatere Tussock Track

Day 1:

Pick up in Christchurch, then we drive for about 5h to Awatere Valley near Blenheim. Meet the local farmers Simon and Lynda around 8pm at the farm cottage where we will stay the first night.

Day 2:

4-5 hours (~9km) walking

Today's walk climbs steadily through rolling tussock country. Partly on sheep tracks we pass through grazing stock, explore pockets of protected native plants and enjoy everchanging views until we reach our well equipped comfortable hut.

Day 3:

4-6 hrs (~7km) walking

A loop track takes us over high ridges and saddles from where spectacular views of the eastern Marlborough high country unfold; on a good day the panorama includes the East Coast, Ure and Clarence Valleys and Mt Tapuaenuku (2887m). You can also opt to stay at the hut to just relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Either way, you will truly feel 'away from it all'!

Day 4:

3-4 hrs (~10km) walking

A return walk along Glen Orkneys western boundary passes an old musterers hut and leads up a rugged bushy creek through a native reserve before following an easy track back to the cottage. Drive back to Christchurch, where we arrive in the evening.
